I Am Myself (What it means to me) – SteelChords
When I started writing “I Am Myself”, it started out as simply writing a song for my favorite character in the show, Derpy, but when I went through the process of writing the lyrics, I found that I put much more personal experience into writing them than I’d originally intended.
When I was younger, throughout all of Elementary and Middle School (K-8th Grade) I was looked at as a bit of an outsider. I didn’t have a whole lot of friends and a lot of people went out of their way to pick on me and make me feel worthless, and for a long time I started to believe it. I would often times make fun of myself just to beat them to the punchline, and get them to leave me alone. By the time 8th grade came around, my psychological pain had gotten to the point where I was mere seconds away from committing suicide.
So, when I started high school, and people stopped picking on me as much and people started wanting to be my friend, I started going through a personal journey. For the next four years I spent a lot of my time trying to improve my attitude towards life, and trying to make everyone around me enjoy themselves. I became much less pessimistic and began doing whatever I could to make people smile and enjoy themselves when, to them, it seemed impossible at the time.
So, when it came down to writing “I Am Myself”, and writing the last two lines of the chorus,
“So I don’t care what they might say,
‘Cause I am myself in my own way.”
I tapped a bit into personal experience saying what I had to tell myself every day at the start of my personal journey,
“I Am Myself. I don’t need to change myself to fit what the world wants me to be. I’m the only ME I’m gonna be, and I’m gonna be the best ME I can possibly be. I am perfect just the way I am, and there’s no reason for me to try to be anyone or anything else. If someone else doesn’t like me for who I am, then they need to change, not me. So I no longer care what they say. I Am Myself!!!”
So I would easily say that “I Am Myself” is the song I’m most proud of because when I look back at where I started, and where I am now, I can see the substantial amount of personal growth that I went through, and I feel like that song is the icing on the cake.
My message to anyone who may be struggling with self-esteem or feeling worthless right now, is to never give up. There’s a phrase I heard in a movie once that I have begun to learn to live by that I hope will help anyone who needs it.
“Everything is always alright in the end. So if everything is not yet alright, it’s not yet the end.”
You are the best YOU that you can be! Don’t rob the world of your awesomeness just because a few people don’t see it yet. Be the best YOU that you can be, and you’ll be happy and proud of yourself for the rest of your life, and people will regret trying to make you feel anything otherwise.
